Here's your chance to take part in a really BIG abseil and help raise funds for charity at the same time! I'll never forget those words,"just lean backwards until you're horizontal". I was zipped in and clipped on and held the ropes in my gloved hands, but there was no escaping the fact that my heels were dangling off the roof and I wasn't ready to get horizontal. Not for anybody!
A few deep breaths and I gingerly let the rope slide slowly through my hands. It held. After a few seconds I was indeed horizontal and ready to go.
My first few pushes off the wall were rather half hearted and I descended a few inches with each one. Confidence boosted, I began bouncing harder off the wall and letting the rope slide through my hands more quickly. Suddenly I felt like an action hero about to save the day and I realised I was thoroughly enjoying myself.
All too soon it was over and I had reached terra firma, much to the relief of my assembled family watching from ground level. My only regret was that I couldn't go straight back up to the roof and do it all again. This time without the terror!
Quarriers has 10 places to fill through ACE Fundraising for an abseil event from the chimney of Raigmore Hospital in Inverness. The hospital is large and impressive and is one of the tallest buildings in the area (if not the tallest!). And the chimney is even taller reaching about 160ft in the air giving participants a unique chance not only to abseil but also to view Inverness as you have probably never seen it before!
