Supporting people in Glasgow

Fred Martin is a small residential family and placement service for people with disabilities.

A is a 19 year old male who is registered blind.  A has recently moved to a new adult family placement in Bargeddie, and he would like support to pursue his sporting interests and to take part in activities in the community.  A is originally from Pakistan, and his first language in Urdu, however he has a very good grasp of English.

A volunteer is needed to build up a friendship with A, and to support him to attend his running club, judo class and to participate in activities in the community.

Main tasks would include:

To support A. to participate in his sporting interests such as running (Linwood Sports Centre) and Judo (Bellahouston Park), along with other activities in the local community including going to the gym, a spin class or the cinema etc.

The purpose of this role would be to support A. to achieve his goals, such as competing in the Para-Olympics/Commonwealth games in running.  To give A. the opportunity to meet new people and to take part in social and sporting activities.

Preferably a male, and a non-smoker.  A. would prefer someone who is active and enjoys participating in sports.  A driver who has the use of a car is preferable.

The volunteer would be someone who can commit to at least a year, and a driver who has the use of a car as A is able to travel by bus with support, however a driver with the use of a car would be preferable to allow to A. attend his running club or judo class.

This would take place Evenings or weekends, 1-2 times per week, from  A’s home in Bargeddie and the surrounding area to access the local gym and cinema etc.  To support A. to travel to Linwood running club (attends Tuesday & Thursday evenings) or Bellahouston Park for Judo (Saturday afternoon), therefore a driver with a use of a car is preferred.

Quarriers have a range of courses that volunteers can attend. Support to volunteers can be provided through a named Quarriers employee,  Project Manager or Team Leader.
