Missed Out, Missing Out

A major Scottish conference highlighting the findings of research into the thousands of adults with a learning disability who live in the family home who have ‘Missed Out’ and are ‘Missing Out’.

Quarriers regretfully announce that the Missed Out, Missing Out conference is cancelled. This is due to circumstances beyond our control.

Stirling Management Centre, Stirling

Missed Out, Missing Out is a major Scottish conference for social work and social care professionals, policy-makers and practitioners. This conference will consider the findings of the recent Quarriers’ research report ‘Missed Out, Missing Out’, and provide the opportunity to share innovative practice and discuss how the recommendations of the report can become a reality, nationwide, for every adult with a learning disability living within the family home.

Quarriers, in partnership with Enable and EDG, offers delegates an opportunity to review current policy and identify future planning implications. The conference will include interactive workshops which will consider examples of good practice.

The workshop sessions will run in the morning and afternoon, allowing delegates to attend 2 sessions as they choose. All workshops will involve presentations and facilitated discussion with the aim of participants leaving with a range of practical solutions.

1. Older Family Carers Toolkit; Linda Kerr, Information Manager, Enable Scotland

  • Linda Kerr manages ENABLE Scotland’s Information Service which provides information to carers, people with learning disabilities and professionals. She is the author of many of ENABLE Scotland’s publications. Over the past year, Linda has been working on developing a toolkit which will aid professional staff in their work with older carers who are supporting family members with a learning disability at home. Linda will talk about the good practice examples illustrated in the toolkit which is due to be published in the near future.

2. Supporting Older Families Initiative; Jill Amies, Eleanor Strang & Helen Wright, Development Workers, Edinburgh Development Group

  • Edinburgh Development Group, a voluntary organisation, was successful in their application for Big Lottery funding, to work with and support older families with a son or daughter with learning disabilities.
The workshop will present the Initiative’s first years findings and share the practical and cost effective solutions they have developed, in the light of the families’ expressed needs.

The approach has two key aims: to better support older family carers in planning for the future and to influence South Lanarkshire Council’s future planning process through using evidence based research. The workshop will briefly cover the background to developing a post dedicated to the needs of older family carers, the development of ‘Time to Think About…’ and the findings from the research so far.

4. The Contribution of Person Centred Planning – Quarriers: Alistair Welsh, Service Manager, Louise Goad, Rose Marshall, Quarriers Person Centred Planning Service and Dr Elisabeth Greene, Parent/Carer

  • ‘The same as you?’ recommends that everyone with a learning disability who wants a Personal Life Plan (person centred plan) should be able to have one. ‘Changing Lives’ the Report of the 21st Century Social Work Review also finds that the lives of people who use services and their carers need to change, giving them a stronger role in the way services are designed and delivered.
