Katy Clark MP visits Seafield School

Katy Clark MP, the new Westminster MP for North Ayrshire and Arran, visited Quarriers’ Seafield School in Ardrossan on Friday 2 September.

She met with several of the pupils as well as Eddie McCaffrey, head teacher; David Hutton, head of childcare and Phil Robinson, chief executive of Quarriers.

Seafield works with boys aged 7 – 17 from all over Scotland, who find mainstream school too much to cope with and are cared for by Quarriers’ staff at Seafield School in partnership with the local authority. Currently 66 children attend on a residential or day basis. The school offers children and young people who have social, emotional or behavioural difficulties a learning environment with intensive support through smaller class sizes and residential units providing support 24/7.

David Hutton, head of childcare at Seafield School said: “We welcome Katy Clark’s visit to our school as we have a particular interest in parliament - our own Young Peoples’ Parliament here at Seafield helps in the decision making process for the running of the school. This kind of service user involvement exists across the whole organisation.”

Quarriers provides support and care for adults and children with a physical or learning disability, for children and families facing poverty, family breakdown, exclusion and disadvantage and for young people with social, emotional or behavioural difficulties, or who are homeless. Quarriers also offers support to carers of all ages who need respite, advice or just a friend to listen, it also has the only residential epilepsy assessment centre in Scotland.

Quarriers has grown considerably since it was founded by William Quarrier during the 1870s, expanding to meet the needs of children, adults and families all over Scotland – and beyond. staff numbers are now in excess of 1500 and the charity has an expected turnover of £35 million for 2005.
