A welcome cash boost of £10,880 awarded by Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland will enable Quarriers Glasgow South West Carers Centre based in Govan to establish a new and innovative Peer Support Programme, reaching out to the estimated 500 young carers living the South West Glasgow.
The idea for the programme came from a group of highly motivated and enthusiastic young carers who worked along side staff from the centre. The group wanted a service for young carers designed by young carers themselves. Most importantly they highlighted the need to receive support from others like them which can make a huge difference to their lives. ‘We need somewhere where we can talk to others who’ve been through what we’re been through and can understand and help.’* Michelle aged 13.
Run by the Centre’s Young Carers Co-ordinator, the Peer Support Programme will provide an opportunity for young carers to enjoy a welcome break from their caring tasks and encourage lasting friendships and support networks with other young carers through regular social activities and an annual activity weekend. Monthly and weekly group meetings will promote self confidence and self esteem and provide opportunities for the young carers to share their problems, speak out on issues that concern them and for their voices to be heard through linking with organisations such as the Scottish Youth Parliament.
Louise McGinty, Project Manager at Glasgow South West Carers Centre said ‘We are delighted with this grant from Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland. Without their generous contribution we simply could not run this pilot programme. We would like to say a big thank you.’
Mary Craig, the Foundation’s Acting Chief Executive, said: “I am extremely pleased the Foundation has been able to provide money to set up this Peer Support Programme, which I’m sure will be very successful in supporting the young people involved. Clearly being a carer has a huge impact on their lives, and it is easy for these young people to become isolated and lose out on their childhood. This work will make sure that doesn’t happen. We’ve supported Quarriers over many years and have great confidence in the work they do.”
If you know of a young carer who could benefit from this programme or would like further information please contact Louise McGinty at Quarriers Glasgow South West Carers Centre on 0141 440 5316
