Leading Scottish care charity Quarriers is to sponsor the Young Lives today conference which is being held in Glasgow's Crowne Plaza Hotel on 14 March 2006.
The one day event will comprise a full and comprehensive seminar programme and a large exhibition which will provide a valuable opportunity for everyone involved with children, young people and families to come together to debate the big issues, share best practice and network.
David Williams, service director for Quarriers said: "As leaders in the social care arena, Quarriers hopes to share best practice ideas with other organisations working with children and young people. The Young Lives Today conference gives us the platform from which to do so and enables us to showcase the innovative work we undertake and generate new ideas."
Issues to be covered on the day include mental health, learning disability, drug and alcohol and youth sectors. There is also a packed seminar programme, which is free to visitors, on a first-come-first-served basis, visitors can choose from 11 different sessions:
- Youth homelessness
- The transition into adulthood for young people with a learning disability
- Therapeutic approaches to residential childcare
- Working with high risk adolescents
- Future of the children's workforce in Scotland
- Additional support for learning
- Life-long learning
- Young people and drugs
- Young people and mental health
- Health and well-being for all young people
- Keynote address from Robert Brown MSP, Deputy Minister for Education and Young People
The event will also feature a range of exciting 'zones', offereing visitors free activities, helpful advice and fun events. These include the Training Zone, where City and Guilds will be offering expert, individual advice on training and career development opportunities; the Healthy Living Zone, where you can get advice on diet, exercise and lifestyle issues; the Activity Zone with a wide range of exciting workshops for everyone, the Arts Zone, where visitors can enjoy inspirational art and photography by children and young people; and the Relaxation Zone to help unwind, de-stress and relax with the help of trained masseurs.
Robert Brown MSP, Deputy Minister for Education and Young People will be delivering the keynote address at Young Lives Today. he said: "Today's young people are tomorrow's citizens. That's why we must help each and every one of them realise their full potential and make sure they get the best possible start in life."
Young Lives Today is being organised by Pavilion, the leading publisher of training materials for those working within care provision. Other sponsors include The Scottish Executive, NHS Health Scotland and Care Visions. Exhibitors include North Lanarkshire Council, Scottish Social Services Coucil, Enable, Frontline Response and NCH.
Julie Gibson, director of Pavilion said: "This is a time of great challenge and opportunity for everyone working with children, young people and families. it's not an easy time for professionals, but most agree that if agencies work together, children will get a better chance to thrive and succeed, and families will be more likely to get the support they need."
She continued: "Young Lives Today is an important event where professionals across different disciplines and agencies can get together to debate and discuss the big issues."
Quarriers provides support and care for adults and children with a physical or learning disability, for children and families facing poverty, family breakdown, exclusion and disadvantage and for young people with social, emotional or behavioural difficulties, or who are homeless. Quarriers also offers support to carers of all ages who need respite, advice or just a friend to listen, it also has the only residential epilepsy assessment centre in Scotland.
The organisation has grown considerably since it was founded by William Quarrier during the 1870s, expanding to meet the needs of children, adults and families all over Scotland - and beyond. Staff numbers are now in excess of 1800 and the charity has an expected turnover of £35 million this year.
