Quarriers' Chavey Down Project celebrates 10 years of care

Quarriers’ Chavey Down project, which provides support to children and young people with disabilities and their families in the south side of Glasgow, marks its 10th birthday with a celebration at Newton Mearns Church Hall on Saturday 6th October.

The staff and young people at Chavey Down have invited friends and family along to join in on the celebrations and have organised activities such as a children’s entertainer, face and nail painting, art workshops, massage therapy and a sports challenge. There will also be a tour of Chavey Down, a presentation and cutting of the cake to mark the occasion.

Brian O’Neill, project manager says: “It has been a great personal privilege for me to have been a part of this project and hope that we are able to carry the learning and experience of the past 10 years far into the future’.

Phil Robinson, Quarriers chief executive, said: “We would like to pay tribute to everyone who has been involved in the work of the project, and in particular acknowledge and thank our staff who have provided such a valuable service in East Renfrewshire, which is often a lifeline to families in the area”.

He continued, “Over the past ten years Chavey Down has moved into the community with the development and implementation of an outreach service. The fact that ‘outreach’ aims to encourage children and young people with disabilities to access activities within their local community is also something to celebrate”.

Chavey Down is a residential respite service providing short stay breaks, play scheme and outreach support for over 60 children and young people between 0-18 years old with a range of learning and/or physical disabilities. Chavey Down offers young people the support they need to develop the awareness of their rights and responsibilities as individuals within they community and to advance their self-help and independence skills.

Quarriers is Scotland’s leading and most diverse social care charity providing support to around 18,000 people through 127 projects for children, young people, adults and families who are known to be experiencing extreme difficulties or who are typically hard-to-reach. The organisation has grown and changed considerably since it was founded in 1871 by William Quarrier at Bridge of Weir, expanding to meet the needs of young homeless people, children and adults with a disability, people with epilepsy and carers from across Scotland and beyond. Staff numbers are now in excess of 1800 and the charity has an expected turnover of £38M this year.
