Last nights (10th May 2006) annual Wags dinner, this year held at the Ardoe House Hotel, Aberdeen, raised a staggering £35, 500 for Quarriers epilepsy fieldwork services in the North East of Scotland.
The event, now in its 15th year was started by ‘Scotland the What’s’ Buff and Margaret Hardie, who were in attendance. Speakers Doug Duthie, Eric Davidson, Alex Fleming and Mark Stephen battled it out for the comedian’s title, voted for by the guests.
Phil Robinson, chief executive of Quarriers, said: “I’d like to thank everyone involved in this fantastic event for their generosity. Quarriers provides a lifeline to many people in the Aberdeen area by offering support and advice to people with epilepsy, and to friends and family members who have to deal with it. This valuable service could not continue to function without the support of this annual charitable event.”
Quarriers operates an epilepsy fieldwork service across Aberdeenshire, Inverness, Glasgow and Lanarkshire, it also has the only residential epilepsy assessment centre in Scotland. The organisation also provides support and care for adults and children with a physical or learning disability, for children and families facing poverty, family breakdown, exclusion and disadvantage and for young people with social, emotional or behavioural difficulties, or who are homeless. Quarriers also offers support to carers of all ages who need respite and advice.
The organisation has grown considerably since it was founded by William Quarrier during the 1870s, expanding to meet the needs of children, adults and families - staff numbers are now in excess of 1800.
The event was kindly sponsored by MacDonald Hotels, John Wood Group and Aberdeen-based Donald Russell.
