Scotland’s leading care charity, Quarriers, would like to congratulate the nursery at Ruchazie Family Resource Centre for being accredited a ‘Smile Too’ nursery, by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, by helping to raise the awareness of the importance of Oral Health Care in an area of Glasgow where there is a high percentage of children with tooth decay.
The nursery, which looks after children from birth to three years of age, has successfully taken part in a city wide initiative run by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, and facilitated locally by East Glasgow Community Health and Care Partnership (CHCP) Oral Health Action Team and is one of many ‘Smile Too’ Nurseries, where staff work together with children, parents and carers to raise awareness of the importance of looking after young children’s teeth. The nursery at Quarriers has been accredited all six sections within the Oral Health Programme, where ‘Community Engagement’, ‘Health Promoting Activities’ and a ‘Healthy Snack Policy’ are just to name a few of the achievements.
Lyanna McGinlay, nursery manager, said: “Being part of this programme has many benefits to the nursery including support from an NHS Community Nursery Nurse from the Oral Health Action Team to give training and advice, to support the nursery tooth-brushing programme and facilitate access to free toothbrushes and toothpaste for children as well as providing the opportunity to borrow resources that help maintain a healthy ethos within the nursery itself.”
She continues: “The children recently had the opportunity to pretend at being dentists, where an area in the nursery was changed into a ‘dentist surgery’ and the children were able to role play using a child sized dental chair, child friendly dental equipment, dental dressing up costumes and giant sized teeth and puppets!”
The Quarriers Ruchazie Family Centre is based in the Ruchazie (east-end) area of Glasgow. It is regarded as a flag-ship service in Scotland for its work engaging with ‘hard-to-reach families and its ground-breaking work with fathers has been replicated by other organisations across the country. The project provides a life-line to many families in the area.
Quarriers is Scotland’s leading and most diverse social care charity providing support to around 18,000 people through 127 projects for children, young people, adults and families who are known to be experiencing extreme difficulties or who are typically hard-to-reach. The organisation has grown and changed considerably since it was founded in 1871 by William Quarrier at Bridge of Weir, expanding to meet the needs of young homeless people, children and adults with a disability, people with epilepsy and carers from across Scotland and beyond. Staff numbers are now in excess of 1800 and the charity has an expected turnover of £38M this year.
