Carers enjoy a pamper day at Dumfries and Galloway College

Being a full-time parent carer is a challenging role, so when you are offered the opportunity for some time away for a lovely pamper session and an afternoon tea, the offer was snapped up by four carers supported by Quarriers D&G Parent Carers Support Service.

Working in partnership with Dumfries and Galloway College’s Stranraer campus, the four ladies went along to enjoy a day of relaxation provided to them by students studying beauty care/therapy, followed with an afternoon tea prepared by students studying hospitality.

Senga Mann, Family Wellbeing Worker at Quarriers D&G Parent Carers Support Service who previously worked at the college, contacted them to see if they would be able to facilitate a pamper day to accommodate some unpaid carers.

On offer was the option of a facial or a back, neck and shoulder massage or a professional manicure.

Senga said: “The carers really enjoyed the day. A chance for some relaxation is what they need most, and the college offered a lovely break from their caring duties.

“I want to thank Julie Reid and Carol McShane for accommodating us to the college. The professionalism of the students was outstanding, and the afternoon tea was beautifully presented and was delicious. They each went home with a box of goodies.

“I hope we can repeat the pamper day with some other carers. Taking care of their own wellbeing is essential to allow them to be energised for their own caring role. Having this opportunity to be with other carers in the same position as them and being able to talk freely is invaluable.”

Julie, one of the carers who was invited along, said: “I attended the college for a pamper day and a wee buffet after. This was a brilliant day, and I loved every minute of it. Exactly what was needed. A bit of me time with the other parents just to chill, talk and have a bite to eat, I want to thank everyone who was involved in arranging it.”

Tina, another of the carers, added: “The Pamper Day came at the right time for me. Life had been busier and more stressful than I ever thought possible, and I was feeling at my limit. The first lovely surprise was finding out we were getting both a massage and nails done before having the afternoon tea. The food was varied and tasty, probably the best afternoon tea selection I’ve seen. I would highly recommend to others.”
